The article explores the specific features of motivation formation for physical education, which is one of the key objectives of modern education. A low level of physical activity among middle school students represents a serious issue that negatively affects their physical, psychological, and social well-being. During adolescence, motivation often fluctuates depending on the stage of personal development, socio-psychological influences, and external factors such as the organization of the educational process and support from family and peers. The aim of this article is to examine the factors that influence the formation of motivation toward physical education among middle school students. Research methods include analysis of academic literature, questionnaire surveys, pedagogical observations, interviews with teachers and students, and methods of mathematical statistics. The study was conducted at Lyceum No. 10 in Zhytomyr from September 2023 to June 2024. One of the fundamental principles of the New Ukrainian School is its focus on the personal development of students and the formation of key competencies, among which health-preserving competence holds a significant place. Integrating elements of new types of physical activity into the curriculum can help meet students’ motivational needs and maintain a high level of engagement. The development of positive motivation among middle school students to participate in physical activity during physical education classes is a multifaceted task that requires addressing both internal needs and interests, as well as eliminating external barriers. Motivation for physical education in this age group is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon shaped by the interaction of internal and external factors. Key theoretical approaches include self-determination theory, which emphasizes the importance of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as well as the influence of social-cognitive factors such as self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-regulation.
