The study aims to substantiate the introduction of the elective course “Cycling Mobility” into the physical education system of Ukrainian secondary schools and to define its key content components. The research employed theoretical methods, including analysis, synthesis, comparison, classification, generalization of scientific and methodological literature, review of regulatory documents, analysis of pedagogical experience, and course modeling. The results reveal a discrepancy between the widespread use of bicycles and other light vehicles by children and the absence of systematic school-based training in their safe and effective use. This gap contributes to unsafe behavior, insufficient knowledge of traffic regulations, and increased risks of road traffic injuries.
A three-stage program for 9th-grade students (14–15 years old) was developed: (1) practical-theoretical training in basic cycling skills on closed grounds; (2) theoretical instruction covering bicycle maintenance, traffic rules, road safety, cycling ethics, and physical training on exercise bikes; and (3) practical training in real traffic conditions through supervised rides coordinated with local police. The program includes ongoing and final assessment, as well as motivational incentives such as certificates and the “Cyclist of Ukraine” badge. Successful implementation requires adequate equipment, trained teachers, safe infrastructure, cooperation with parents, and strict safety measures during practical activities. Conclusions. The elective course can increase students’ physical activity, improve road safety, foster environmental awareness, and promote cycling as a socially significant form of mobility. The proposed program may serve as a practical tool for physical education teachers and provides a basis for further experimental research.
