The main aim of the article was to research how the U.S. Army has changed its way of assessing of physical abilities of soldiers. It focused on the process of creating the Army Combat Fitness Test (APFT). The previous test - the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) was used from 1980 to 2020. The APFT included three exercises: sit-ups, push-ups and two mile run. The APFT was not providing enough assessment of strength, agility, speed or the ability to perform real task in combat gear. In additional, the low level of similarity with Warrior Tasks was mentioned by commanders of brigades which took part in combat missions. That was the main reason to start new research about creating a new system of physical training and a new physical test. In 2013 the Center for Initial Military Training, supported by TRADOC (Training and Doctrine Command), began working on new approach. More than five years they studied 57484 sources, used experts in medicine and sport science, furthermore tested exercises in real Army units. As a result, the ACFT was created. It consists of six exercises: the deadlifts, power throw, hand-release push-ups, sprint-drag-carry, leg truck (the plank in the next generation of ACFT) and two-mile run. These activities are able to test all abilities than are used during Warrior Tasks, that was not provided during APFT. ACFT more clearly reflect a soldier's physical fitness. It helps commanders better understand soldier’s readiness, spot weak areas and to find better way to train. Additionally, it aims to reduce injures, increase soldiers` motivation and promote their healthier lifestyle in the Army. In conclusion there is an opinion that Ukrainian Armed Forces might benefit from adapting model of creating ACFT to improve their own process of fitness testing.
