The article presents the results of a study on the adaptation of international models of social inclusion through adaptive sport in higher education and the development of an experimental approach for Ukrainian universities, exemplified by the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine. The purpose of the research was to investigate the impact of a pilot adaptive sport program on students’ physical, social, and psychological indicators and to explore strategies for integrating inclusive sport practices into extracurricular university activities. The study involved 40 participants, including students with disabilities and their peers, as well as teaching staff. A mixed-methods approach was applied, including literature review, comparative analysis of international and domestic adaptive sport practices, surveys and interviews, experimental implementation of a 15-week pilot program, and statistical analysis.
The pilot program incorporated integrated activities such as sitting volleyball, boccia, table tennis, and aerobics, combining students with and without disabilities in team-based sessions. Results indicated significant improvements in students’ physical fitness (from 60% to 80%), social integration (from 55% to 78%), self-esteem and confidence (from 50% to 72%), and motivation to participate in adaptive sport activities (from 65% to 85%). Teaching staff demonstrated increased readiness and competence to conduct adaptive sessions (from 60% to 90%). Qualitative observations confirmed the enhancement of an inclusive university environment, mutual support, and teamwork skills. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of adapting international inclusive sport models to the Ukrainian higher education context and support the feasibility of scaling such programs across other universities.
