Floral Emblem of Massachusetts: Mayflower (Epigaea repens, Trailing Arbutus)

Метою презентованої статті було вивчити та описати квіткову емблему штату Массачусетс− Мейфлауер, травнева квітка, епіге́я (Epigaea repens), яка є його офіційною державною квіткою. Наукова назва: Epigaea repens (за Ліннеєм, 1753 р.); з грецької та латинської мов, буквально означає "повзуче" (або, що біжить по землі"), і є влучним описом того, як росте Мейфлауер: його довгі дерев’яні стебла щільно прилягають до землі.

The aim of this paper was to study and describe floral emblem of Massachusetts: Mayflower (Epigaea repens), which is the Massachusetts State Flower and the provincial flower of Nova Scotia. The scientific name, Epigaea repens, coined by Linnaeus in 1753 from Greek and Latin, literally means creeping (or running) on the earth, which is an apt description of the way mayflower grows, its long, woody stems clinging tightly to the ground.
