This article is devoted to the study of full-page engravings created by the German master engraver Andreas Nunzer, included in the 1755 edition of the Bible translated by Martin Luther. The object of the research is a cycle of eight engravings that form part of the structure of the edition and constitute an important component of its artistic and decorative design. The main focus is placed on the compositional structure of the images, the iconography of biblical figures, symbolism, and the artistic features of the engravings. The methodological basis of the study is a complex of scholarly approaches, including art-historical, iconographic, and comparative analysis. In the interpretation of the images, the principles of the iconographic method formulated by Erwin Panofsky are applied, which involve the analysis of a work of art through a system of symbols and cultural-historical contexts.
The article attempts to reveal the distinctive features of the engraver’s artistic language, in particular the use of Baroque decorative elements, a complex system of chiaroscuro modeling, and expressive plasticity of figures. Iconographic representations of selected biblical figures are analysed, including depictions of the Evangelists and prophets of the Old and New Testaments. Attention is also given to the translation of inscriptions within cartouches accompanying the compositions, as well as to their interpretation in the context of the biblical text. As a result of the study, it has been established that the engravings perform not only a decorative function but also play an important didactic role, assisting the reader in visually comprehending the content of the Holy Scripture. It has been determined that the illustrative cycle forms a coherent iconographic program of the edition and reflects the characteristic features of German book graphics of the mid-eighteenth century. The results obtained may be used in further research on the history of European book printing, biblical iconography, and the artistic design of early printed books.
